Review: Pretty Deadly #1

Author’s note: While I was out traveling for work, the League ate delicious blue cupcakes  and lemon cookies brought in by League Ladies Lauren and Cee and League Lady Paradise took fabulous notes for this review. Thanks, Ladies!

Pretty Deadly is a relatively new series that started in October 2013.  According to Image’s website, the series, by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Rios, “marries the magical realism of Sandman with the western brutality of Preacher.”

Things we liked

  • the art; style felt similar to American Vampire
  • multiple image artwork

Things we didn’t like

  • confusing
    • who is narrating?
    • was the blind guy actually blind?
    • what’s up with the tarot cards? Is she actually reading them or are they just a part of the scam?

Random things that caught our attention (for better or worse)

  • dead bunny was disturbing

Overall, we wondered whether it would be better if it only came out in trades due to too much info in one comic. It left us with a feeling of “is this too final?” and  “Will things be further explained?”
