Review: Rat Queens Issue 1

League member, Nola, had her fan art displayed on the Official Rat Queens Facebook page.

Rat Queens is a new comic by  Kurtis J. Wiebe about group of four tough, party-loving,  mercenaries-for-hire females set in a fantasy-styled world that’s like Legend of Zelda, World of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings all jumbled in a dice bag.

Things we liked

  • The characters – we especially liked Hannah and Betty
  • The lack of a primary romance

Things we didn’t like

  • Nothing that stood out

Random things that caught our attention (for better or worse)

  • Some of the characters are drawn in ways that made us think of other characters from other markets, like World of Warcraft. Not sure if that was intentional but it caught our eye.

Although we all enjoyed Rat Queens, it may not make our  “must continue reading forever” list. It was light and fun and most of us will check out least a few more issues.  The good news is that if it keeps being about the adventures of the Rat Queens, we’ll be able to revisit it whenever we need a light-hearted, female, butt-kicking pick-me-up.
